CHEM 4330K - Instrumental Analysis (3 Lecture Hours 1 Lab Hours 4 Credit Hours)
Prerequisite: CHEM 3310K Minimum Grade: C and (PHYS 2212 Minimum Grade: C or PHYS 1112 Minimum Grade: C) and MATH 2644 Minimum Grade: C and (Concurrent Prerequisite CHEM 3521 or Concurrent Prerequisite CHEM 3522 or Concurrent Prerequisite CHEM 3523 ) This is a course designed for chemistry majors that covers the use of instrumentation for chemical analysis. Topics will include optical spectroscopy, NMR, mass spectrometry and selected topics in polarimetry, voltammetry and chromatography. In this class, we will dis-cuss the theory behind the analysis (with a strong emphasis on quantum mechanics and spectroscopy), instrumental operation (that covers the electronics and optical components of instruments), and the data analysis and interpretation (which includes signal processing, Fourier transformation, and statistical analysis). There is a three hour laboratory component to the course. Laboratory exercises will familiarize students with electronics, applications of spectroscopy, chemical instrumentation and data analysis.
